A performance commemorating the tragic events that took place in the city on that same day in 1813.
In 1813, during the Spanish War of Independence, the city of San Sebastián suffered a terrible fire. It was August 31st.
Only one street remained standing, today known as 31st August Street. Every year San Sebastián commemorates this tragic event. Like in past editions, the city will offer a wide range of activities for everyone. On August 31st the main celebration takes place at night. At 9.30pm the lights of the city are switched off and candles are lighted in the balconies and on the streets. Txistularis perform the hymn of the city with their txistus or Basque flutes and then they parade from the church of San Vicente to the church of Santa Maria carrying torches, rifles and trumpets.
Once lights are turned on and the route finished, around 10pm trikitixa players will walk the streets of the Old Town and will liven up the festive atmosphere of the special day.
