The title refers to the frequency of a strange sound recorded over the last 35 years in different parts of the Pacific, similar to the song of a blue whale. But blue whales communicate at frequencies ranging from 10 to 39 hertz, so the voice of this strange “lonely whale,” vibrating at 52 hertz, is outside the species’ hearing threshold. It is believed that the “52 Hertz Whale” may have been deaf from birth, and therefore never learned to sing at the correct frequency. No other whale has ever been able to hear its call.
52 Hertz uses the metaphor of this “lonely whale,” which has become a symbol of social isolation, to weave together a multifaceted view of people who are suffering or have suffered unwanted loneliness, in a kind of “crossed lives” in which some influence others.
