The txakoli of Getaria

White wine with Designation of Origin, coastal essence and Basque tradition

Txakoli with the designation of origin ‘Getariako txakolina’ is mainly produced in the coastal towns of Gipuzkoa, where there are more than 433 hectares of vineyards. The white grape Hondarribi Zuri is the main variety used to make Txakoli de Getaria. It’s a young and fruity white wine, with moderate alcohol content (between 9.5 and 11.5%), with a beautiful pale yellow colour and intense citric, herbal and floral aromas, very easy to drink.
It was traditionally made in farm houses, and there are documents proving it has been sold at least since the beginning of the 16th century in Gipuzkoa. The grapes are harvested in late September or early October when the bunches have reached optimum ripeness and balance between sugars and acidity.
This Txakoli is an excellent companion to fish and seafood. Try it with salted anchovies and bonito in oil, appetizers offered by the txakoli producers of Getaria when you visit their wineries.
