Black Goya, Black Motherwell: Eighty Disasters and an Abyss
If you want more information , you can access the organizer detail sheet.
In this exhibition, Black Goya, Black Motherwell: Eighty Disasters and an Abyss, the San Telmo Museum presents one of its most recent acquisitions: The Disasters of War by Francisco de Goya (1810–1820). These images belong not only to their own time but also endure and resonate with the catastrophes of the 20th and 21st centuries. Opposite the narrative and explicit scenes of Goya’s series stands an abstract black canvas, Iberia (1958), by the American expressionist painter Robert Motherwell. It serves as a counterpoint to The Disasters: from explicit violence to emotional resonance, from raw figuration to abstract synthesis, from screams to absolute silence.
