It is impossible to understand contemporary Basque dance and its evolution over the past 60 years without Argia. The work carried out by Argia from the 1960s to the present, under the direction of Marian Arregi and Juan Antonio Urbeltz, has expanded the reach of dance.
Fieldwork conducted village by village rescued from oblivion various dances, melodies, and costumes that were on the verge of being lost forever due to the war of 1936 and the repression that followed. Dances, understood as symbols in motion, were the focus of this research. All of this took place under the auspices of the San Telmo Museum, in collaboration with the group, which provided them with a venue and materials for their research. The museum attracted those who were promoters of the revitalization of Basque culture in the 1960s and 1970s, turning Argia’s rehearsals into a laboratory for new ideas. That work transformed and revitalized Basque dance. This exhibition chronicles that revolution.
