Divinas palabras is Valle-Inclán’s most universal work, as it is, by far, the one that has been staged most often outside of Spain—undoubtedly due to its literary quality and richness of imagery.

The central theme is none other than greed, lust, and death—which Valle described like no one else and portrays with tremendous cruelty, yet also in a grotesque light—depicting human misery embodied in the family of a village sacristan, though it can easily be extrapolated to our own immediate reality.

The 40th-anniversary celebration has marked an exponential leap forward for Atalaya, and the best way to capture this is through this new production. Undoubtedly, key to such growth has been the training of Atalaya’s various generations of actors and the director by the hundred or so masters and teachers of theatrical traditions from around the world who have left their legacy at the TNT Center. The most significant factor in this progression is the voice—both in the treatment of the text and in the chants performed live by the actors, which generate tremendous emotional power. The new version of Divinas palabras reflects this evolution.
