Javier Liñera & Ékoma Teatro present a theatrical production that explores the construction—and deconstruction—of what it means to be a man, drawing from a personal experience that becomes a collective one.
A man in his 40s, together with his alter ego, Barbie, will conduct his own “autopsy” of his life. In doing so, they will unravel what his childhood was like, how he experienced adolescence and adulthood, and how he was influenced by teachers, his father, grandparents, friends, and other male figures. They will discover how his own masculinity has taken shape. The play stems from this idea: the deconstruction of masculinity. It raises questions about identity—about what is masculine and what is not—and how masculinity is constructed, delving into the idea we’ve held since childhood of what it means to be masculine.
The company summarizes the play as follows: “A courageous, reflective, and necessary piece that challenges the audience and invites them to reexamine their own certainties.”
