Donostia, by locals

What to do in Donostia / San Sebastián when it’s cold or rainy?

San Sebastián is an ideal place to spend your holidays or enjoy a weekend getaway. If you’ve decided to spend a few days in the Pearl of the Cantabrian Sea and you’re met with weather you didn’t expect (or maybe you did), don’t worry—San Sebastián offers plenty of great alternatives for bad weather:

1. Visit the Tourist Information Office

Rain or shine… all the information you need so you don’t miss a thing is at Boulevard 8! You can also buy a lovely iridescent umbrella or a Donostia San Sebastián Turismoa raincoat to keep yourself dry if it rains (though if it’s pouring, an umbrella might not be enough).

2. Soak up some culture in Donostia’s museums and art spaces!

There’s nothing better for a rainy day! The city boasts a varied and comprehensive museum offering that caters to the curiosity of even the most inquisitive visitors, with rich exhibitions and modern facilities. Visit the many museums, art galleries, and other spaces dedicated to art and culture!

3. On rainy days, we’re treated to a spectacular wave show!

Did you know that during storms in San Sebastián, waves can reach between 5 and 10 meters, and sometimes even up to 20 meters? You can admire the spectacle—or capture the moment—from Paseo Nuevo, Mount Urgull, or the Peine del Viento… but be careful—don’t get too close!

4. Shopping made in Donostia

San Sebastián has managed to preserve the essence of traditional shopping, with a wide range of stores offering the same lifelong products with the same quality as always—alongside ultra-sophisticated shops, alternative stores, and big-name brand boutiques. And since it’s not a very large city, shopping areas are more compact, making it especially easy and enjoyable to go shopping. Discover all the options for a great shopping experience!

5.Have family fun without getting wet!

Learn while having fun among more than 200 species of fish at the Aquarium, be amazed by the large planetarium and the hands-on science experiments for kids at Eureka! Zientzia Museoa, or show off your moves at the Txuri-Urdin Ice Palace. We’ve got plenty of plans to enjoy with children!

6. Enjoy the downpour… from a spa with sea views

A bath with spectacular views over La Concha Bay is simply irresistible! Relaxation, well-being, bubbles, seawater… a unique place in Europe where marine water is the key to achieving true relaxation and physical toning.

7. In this city, you eat well in every possible way… treat yourself!

We’re right in the middle of cider house season… standing or seated, the atmosphere in a sagardotegi is something you simply have to experience. And if you prefer, you can enjoy San Sebastián’s cuisine through another unforgettable gastronomic experience: Michelin stars, traditional markets, the best pintxos…

8. Discover every corner of Donostia without a single drop falling on you

The San Sebastián City Tour offers a panoramic route with the best views of the city. A fun way to explore San Sebastián without getting wet!

9. Get to know Basque pelota up close

Pelota is both fun and culture! Head to the Galarreta fronton and enjoy Remonte, one of the most spectacular Basque pelota disciplines. You can also visit the Atano III Fronton or Balda to experience the world of Basque pelota firsthand.
